Better eyes through eating

You have probably heard about the benefits of eating carrots for eye health. Orange-colored fruits and vegetables are filled with Beta Carotene which promotes good vision by helping parts of the eye work together, preventing the risk of cataracts and slowing the loss of visual acuity.

What you may not know is there are many other foods and vitamins essential for healthy eyes. Make these foods a part of your regular diet to keep your eyes in top shape.

Leafy greens are packed with antioxidants including lutein. According to, lutein is found as color pigment in the human eye and acts like a light filter, protecting the eye tissues from sunlight damage. Studies show that lutein lowers the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Not a fan of green vegetables? You can get lutein through eggs. The yolk is a prime source of lutein plus zinc, which also reduces your macular degeneration risk.

Citrus and berries are filled with vitamin C, which can also fight macular degeneration and cataracts. Vitamin C helps the body maintain healthy tissues and boost the immune system. Look for guava, kiwi, oranges, grapefruit and strawberries for maximum vitamin C.

Almonds are a great source of vitamin E. One ounce provides about half your daily dose. This powerful antioxidant is credited with reducing the risk of cataracts by 25% in research involving nearly 5,000 patients.

The fatty acid known as DHA, which is found in your retina, is found in fatty tuna fish, salmon, mackerel and anchovies. Low levels of DHA have been linked to dry eye syndrome.
