TECNIS® SYMFONY Intraocular Lens
The TECNIS® Symfony Intraocular Lens is a new breakthrough in the field of surgically implanted lenses – the first and only lens in the United States to provide a full range of continuous high-quality vision following cataract surgery. And we are excited to be the first eye surgeon in South Jersey to offer this revolutionary lens!
The lens is engineered to reduce the effects of presbyopia (nearsightedness) while still maintaining excellent distance vision – something no other surgically implanted lens has been able to do.
During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Most IOLs are monofocal, meaning they can focus at a single distance, usually far. To focus on near objects, patients must use reading glasses. In contrast, the new Symfony lens allows focusing at near and far distances without loss of clarity, reducing or removing the need for additional eyewear.
We also offer a version of the lens for treatment of astigmatism, the TECNIS® Symfony Toric IOL.
In some cases, the surface of the cornea is curved more like a football, with both flatter and steeper curves. This common irregularity, called corneal astigmatism, causes blurred or distorted vision because light rays are not focused at one spot to provide clear vision.
A person who has both a cataract and corneal astigmatism can only have high-quality distance vision (without glasses) by correcting the astigmatism during surgery. Toric IOL’s are specially designed to correct astigmatism along with overall vision during cataract surgery. This solution provides excellent distance vision correction without glasses.
Whether a Toric lens is best for you depends on the unique characteristics of your eye. You and your doctor will decide together if this choice is right for you.
